Local government leaders and business executives talk business with Turkish Delegation
Gwinnett County, Metro Atlanta, GA – At an 1818 Club luncheon on October 20th, the Gwinnett Chamber economic development along with local leaders in government hosted an eight-person Turkish delegation looking to identify business development opportunities in the United States, and in particular, the State of Georgia. The luncheon is one of many events in direct response to Gwinnett’s global business recruitment strategy launched just this year.
Executive Director of the Istanbul Center, Tarik Celik, joined the delegation and commented, “We are privileged to have such a qualitative group of high-ranking officials and decision-makers visiting from Turkey. Our goal is to assist them in making the appropriate connections and creating the right opportunities for further business development of Turkish industry here in Gwinnett and the State of Georgia.”
At the luncheon guests were treated with a comprehensive overview of what Gwinnett has to offer in business development assistance and economic growth of global industry in its borders.
“When we launched the global business strategy this year, we had a very clear-cut objective to identify opportunities and maximize the effectiveness of those opportunities for business and partnerships with countries all over the world, starting with those who had a presence already here in Gwinnett,” said Nick Masino, VP of economic development & Partnership Gwinnett at the Gwinnett Chamber. “We are honored to be hosting such an amazing delegation from Turkey and hope to provide them with assistance in any way possible.”
The delegation and local representatives included Honorable Gonul Sahkulubey, MP of Turkish Parliament; Honorable Dilek Yuksel, MP of Turkish Parliament; Honorable Hasan Duruer, Governor of Mardin; Mrs. Zeliha Duruer, First Lady of Mardin; Tarik Celik, Executive Director of Istanbul Center; Isa Afacan, Director of Academic Affairs, Istanbul Center; Mr. Gurkan Ekicikol: Director of Educational Programs at Istanbul Center; Jose Perez is the Seventh Congressional District Representative of the Georgia State Board of Education and President of Target Market Trends; Ferhat Demir - Executive Director Turkish American Chamber of Commerce of the Southeast; Mayor Bucky Johnson, Mayor City of Norcross; Mayor Diana Preston, Mayor City of Lilburn; Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks, Mayor City of Dacula; Mayor Linda Blechinger, Mayor City of Auburn; Jay Eun, Gwinnett Chamber Executive Board Member, Chairman of the Gwinnett Global Business Council & Chairman of the Korean American Association of Greater Atlanta; Mike Runyan, Gwinnett Chamber Board Member; Nick Masino, VP of Economic Development & Partnership Gwinnett, Gwinnett Chamber; Mark Farmer, Research Manager, Gwinnett Chamber and Lindsay Wing, Partnership Gwinnett Coordinator, Gwinnett Chamber.
The event concluded with a gift exchange by the Gwinnett Chamber, the city of Lilburn and the Turkish Delegation.
“We are so pleased to be making global connections for our cities and our community,” said Mayor Diana Preston of Lilburn. “This was a great opportunity for Gwinnett and the cities represented today and we look forward to many more opportunities down the road as we continue to partner with the Gwinnett Chamber and its strategic economic development plan, Partnership Gwinnett.”
According to the Istanbul Center, there are nearly 5,000 Turkish people in the North Metro Atlanta region. Many come to the US for graduate study and job opportunities. The delegation’s visit hopes to add business growth opportunity to those reasons and will work with the Metro Atlanta connections made during this visit to identify and develop future business matchmaking events.
